Acceptable Diabetic Foods

This list is based on a low-carb diet plan, although it is not strictly low-carbs. Carbs are allowed, but try to avoid processed carbs as much as possible. Processed carbs are prepackaged foods, cakes, cookies, most breads, pasta, etc.

Proteins:
Fish
Shellfish
Lean meats
Poultry

Fruits & Vegetables:
You can basically eat all the leafy greens you want.
Limit the consumption of potatoes, sweet potatoes and other root vegetables.
Limit the consumption of corn.
Limit fruits, but have one to two servings per day.

Tip: Banana and peanut butter are a great snack and also a good source of potassium, which is important to diabetics.

Extremely limit or avoid:
Corn
Potatoes
Pasta
Bread
Instant oatmeal

Low GI Foods: Eat in moderation
Peas, beans, legumes
Brown rice
Whole grains
Steel cut oats

Other Moderation Foods: One serving per day is acceptable
Dairy
Nuts & Seeds
